Preliminary hearings begin for Colorado shooter James Holmes
The scene in the Colorado courtroom was an emotional one as testimony began to determine weather the case against James Holmes will go to trial. Holmes is accused of 166 charges related to a mass shooting he perpetrated in an Aurora, Colorado movie theater. The testimonies included that of Officer Justin Grizzle, who transported the wounded to the hospital. “After I saw what I saw in the theater – horrific – I didn’t want anyone else to die.” Officers struggled to hold back tears as they recounted the bloodshed. Sergant Gerald Jonsgaard almost broke down as he recalled not finding a pulse on the youngest victim, 6-year-old, Veronica Moser-Sullivan.
Twelve people were killed and at least 70 injured in the July 20 shooting. Holmes reportedly bought his ticket to the screening of “The Dark Knight Rises” two weeks in advance. He entered the theater wearing body armor and tossed two gas canisters into the packed theater before opening fire.
Officer Jason Oviatt, who ultimately detained Holmes, also testified. Oviatt recalled that when he handcuffed Holmes and searched him, Holmes was very sweaty and his pupils were extremely wide. He said Holmes seemed “very, very relaxed” and “seemed very detached.”
Holmes’ attorneys are expected to argue the insanity defense. It is uncertain whether or not Holmes’ doctor will testify. His doctor may be excluded from testimony because of doctor-patient confidentiality privilege.
