Member of US Secret Service dies from apparent suicide

US Secret Service special agent Rafael Prieto was found dead after an apparent suicide. His body was discovered in a car with the engine running, prompting investigators to believe his death was due to carbon monoxide poisoning. Prieto was reportedly under investigation for failing to inform his superiors of a romantic relationship he had with a foreign national. Agents are required to report all relationships with foreign nationals to ensure the relationship does not present a national security threat. The Secret Service agency, which is responsible for the personal security of the president, vice president, and their families, says it is “mourning the loss of a valued colleague.” Secret Service agents have been under particularly close scrutiny since a prostitution scandal in Columbia this year where a number of agents were dismissed after allegations they had hired prostitutes while in Cartagena in preparation for President Obama’s attendance of the Summit of the Americas. Prieto admitted to having an affair with a woman from Mexico. It is not believed his relationship compromised national security, but rather it was a breach in protocol since he did not report the relationship directly.
