James Holmes, movie theater shooting suspect, faces formal charges

Prosecutors in Colorado are filing formal charges on Monday against James E. Holmes, the former neuroscience student accused of murdering 12 people and wounding 58 others in a movie theater massacre. Legal analysts expect the case will be dominated by arguments over the defendant’s sanity.

Holmes reportedly began collecting gear for his assault four months ago. According to authorities, Holmes bought his weapons in May and June, well before the shooting spree, which occurred after midnight on a Friday during a showing of the Batman film “The Dark Knight Rises.” The police arrested him outside the theater. “I don’t think it’s too hard to predict the path of this proceeding,” said Craig Silverman, a former chief deputy district attorney in Denver. “This is not a whodunit. … The only possible defense is insanity.”
