Alaska cities seek help surviving brutal winter

The Alaska National Guard is busy shoveling out the town of Cordova, which has already received a devastating 200 inches of snowfall this winter. Anchorage, another community in Alaska, was just recovering from a blizzard that covered the town in 15 feet of snow when they were hit by another storm on Tuesday. Due to a shortage of shovels, a spokesman for the city has turned to a manufacturer for a special order.

After the storm knocked out power in parts of Homer, the city put out an advisory to boat owners that 16 inches of snow could accumulate.  Boats will be cleared due to the sinking of three caused by of the weight of the snow, which has also led to roof collapses. The Red Cross has turned the city recreation center into a shelter and the military has been called to assist in organizing.
