Sen. Currie declared not guilty in corruption case
Jurors acquitted Maryland Sen. Ulysses Currie of bribery and other corruption charges, citing reasonable doubt. Prosecutors sought to prove Currie was guilty, along with executives from Shoppers Food Warehouse, of using his Senate office to conduct favors for the grocery chain, such as traffic light requests, a liquor license transfer and development deals. Juror No. 12,Seth Binfield, said the evidence didn’t quite match up.
Jurors were agreed that Currie’s actions raised ethical questions, but that ultimately they did not match the crimes with which Currie and the grocery store executives had been charged: bribery, extortion, conspiracy and making false statements to the FBI.
