Howard County police say the department’s helicopter was damaged during an emergency landing in the football field of Columbia high school. The landing stemmed from mechanical failure, but no one was injured.

Police responded to a call at 11 p.m. on Thursday and shortly thereafter experienced mechanical problems with the helicopter and proceeded to land it in the football field. Significant damage was done to the aircraft, but the damage to the field was minimal.

Four officers were aboard the helicopter, all from different counties. The cause of the mechanical difficulties is under investigation. Inspectors will visit the landing site on Friday.
