Maryland – Defense to rest in Gray case

0

Defense attorneys in the case against Baltimore Officer Edward Nero charged in the arrest and death of Freddie Gray are expected to finish Wednesday, with closing arguments expected Thursday. Nero is facing charges of assault, misconduct in office and reckless endangerment. The defense presented witness testimony Tuesday, including that of former Baltimore commander Timothy Longo. Prosecutors say Nero and two other officers failed to buckle Gray into a seat belt after illegally arresting him, resulting in a critical spinal injury and ultimately his death a week later. The defense says Nero wasn’t the arresting officer when Gray was arrested and that it is the job of the wagon driver to ensure prisoners are buckled properly.
