Cruise ship returns to U.S. after fire
A fire at sea aborted the Royal Caribbean’s Grandeur of the Seas ship on Tuesday. Over 2,200 passengers were expected back in Baltimore after being flown on charter flights from the Bahamas.
The fire began at 2:50 a.m. on Monday and was extinguished two hours later. No injuries have been reported and a cause of the fire is not yet known. The U.S. Coast Guard and the National Transportation Safety Board plan to investigate.
The ship left port on Friday from Baltimore for a seven-night cruise and was headed for CocoCay, Bahamas. Royal Caribbean said the ship never lost power and was able to sail smoothly into port in Freeport.
After the fire, executives met with passengers and arranged flights for each guests. Guests will also receive a full refund of their fare and a certificate for a cruise in the future.
