The family of Emmett Till is not impressed with the letter of apology sent by Lil Wayne for his offensive lyrics referencing the Civil Rights martyr. The family now wishes to arrange a meeting with the rapper to discuss his vulgarity as well as his partnership with PepsiCo’s Mountain Dew.

Lil Wayne’s letter offered empathy for the family and expressed a willingness to correct the lyrics, but it fell short of an apology. The letter came 75 days after the song hit the Internet. “I think it’s a start,” says Airickca Gordon-Taylor, a cousin of Till’s, “I think the door is now open for us to have a sit-down, to have a dialogue.”

The rapper made an offensive reference to Till in a guest appearance of the song “Karate Chop” by rapper Future. In seven words, the rapper refers to beating someone during a sexual act and doing as much damage as was done to Till.

Till, a black teen from Chicago was visiting his family in Mississippi in 1995 and was killed there for allegedly whistling at a white woman. Till was beaten, his eyes were gauged out and he was shot in the head before his white assailants (including the woman’s husband) tied his body to a cotton gin fan with barbed wire and threw him into Tallahatchie River.
