Spike Lee works on Michael Jackson documentary
Director Spike Lee is working on a documentary about the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson. The film, which is currently untitled, will center on the “Smooth Criminal” and “The Way You Make Me Feel” singer’s seventh studio album, “Bad.” Lee’s documentary will be just one of a flood of material released in celebration of the album’s 25th anniversary. “Bad” is being rereleased Sept. 18 with additional tracks, a DVD and other bonus material. Lee, who is famous for directing films like “Do The Right Thing” and “Malcolm X,” has not mentioned when his documentary will debut, though it is said to come out later this year.
Lee hopes to pay tribute to the Grammy Award-winning album and illustrate the late Jackson’s personal side. “He had a great sense of humor, and he was funny — so you’ll see a lot of that stuff,” Lee said. Lee, 55, interviewed artists like Kanye West, Mariah Carey, L.A. Reid and Sheryl Crow, who was Jackson’s background singer on the “Bad” tour. “We really divided it into two things: Artists today who were influenced by Michael, and then people who worked side by side — musicians, songwriters, technicians, engineers, people at the label, who were all committed to Michael, to the follow-up to the biggest record of all time, which still is ‘Thriller.’”
Jackson, who died June 25, 2009, would have turned 54 next month.
