Special screening of ‘Citizen Kane’ to play at Hearst Castle

Fifty film fans will have the rare opportunity to watch Orson Welles’ 1941 groundbreaking film “Citizen Kane” (partially based on the late William Randolph Hearst) at the media mogul’s own private theater at Hearst Castle. The screening will take place on Friday, with a hefty price tag of $1,000. The screening will be part of the San Luis Obispo Film Festival and include an exclusive tour of the estate, which is now a state park, and a reception on the mansion’s patio overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It will benefit the nonprofit Friends of Hearst Castle, a preservation group. The cinema classic has been shown before in Hearst Castle, but this will be the first time the film is screened in the palatial, 50-seat theater at the hilltop estate. Great-grandson Stephen Hearst gave his blessing to the festival to screen the film. He stated that he will not be attending the screening, but sees it as an opportunity to showcase the differences between his great-grandfather and Charles Foster Kane, the character portrayed by Welles. The screening will be hosted by Ben Mankiewicz, the grandson of Herman Mankiewicz, who co-wrote the “Citizen Kane” screenplay.
