Robin Roberts of Good Morning America will take an indefinite leave of absence starting on Friday to treat for MDS, a blood and bone marrow disease that can transform into a type of Leukemia if not treated. Roberts made the announcement on Mondays show, saying she was “very blessed” to have the opportunity to leave and come back when she is well enough. Roberts told viewers she had MDS in July.
She will be hospitalized next week for a bone marrow transplant, and it is not known how long her absence will be after the transplant. Roberts is a breast cancer survivor. Roberts’ sister will provide bone marrow for the transplant.
