Randy Travis pleads not guilty to assault

Country singer Randy Travis was arrested in August for getting into a fight outside a church in Texas. Today was his first court appearance and he pled not guilty to the charge of assault. The fight was allegedly over a family dispute, but there are conflicting stories regarding the details. Travis’ lawyer, Larry Friedman, told TMZ that the fight arose from Travis’ fiance arguing with her ex husband and that Travis came to her defense. According to the Dallas Morning News however, Friedman says that Travis was trying to protect a woman and her daughter from two men. “He intervened in an assault by two men who were beating two women, one of whom was a minor. When he intervened, one of those two attackers attacked Randy, and he defended himself,” said Friedman. There have been allegations that Travis was drunk during the fight, which he denies. “Randy is no longer drinking any alcohol,” Friedman added to Dallas Morning News. “He’s committed to a new fitness regimen that includes a strict three-hour workout every day and a new high-protein diet.”
