Randy Newman unveils satirical song about racism in America

Singer-songwriter is attempting to draw attention to racism in the United States and the role he believes it is playing in the current presidential campaign with his new song, a satirical spin off of the classic Christmas carol “White Christmas.” “I’m dreaming of a white president,” the facetious ballad goes, “just like the ones we’ve always had. A real live white man, who knows the score, how to handle money or start a war, wouldn’t even have to tell me what we were fighting for…He won’t be the brightest, perhaps, but he’ll be the whitest, and I’ll vote for that.”” Newman has a history of using satire in his music to make political statements. In this case he is attempting to convey to listeners the type of racism he feels is behind different debates surrounding President Barack Obama such as his place of birth. On a more general level, he is trying to communicate to listeners how you “can’t always trust…the narrarators.”
“I think there are a lot of people who find it jarring to have a black man in the White House and they want him out,” he writes to his listeners. “They just can’t believe that there’s not a more qualified white man. You won’t get anyone, and I do mean anyone, to admit it.” The song is available for free on the internet but Newman is using it to promote donorship of the United Negro College Fund.
