British film director Tony Scott apparently left notes in his vehicle and office before jumping to his death from the Vincent Thomas Bridge in San Pedro, California, according to a Los Angeles County coroner on Monday. Lieutenant Joe Bale of the coroner’s office said Scott, who is best known for his direction in mega-films such as “Top Gun” and “Beverly Hills Cop II,” committed suicide by jumping from the bridge around noon on Sunday.

Bale said, “There’s nothing to indicate it is anything else at this time.” Deputy Chief Coroner Ed Winter said a friend of Scott, 68, found a note from the famous director in his Los Angeles office, written for his family. There was also a note left in Scott’s car on the bridge including names and phone numbers for his family, which was reportedly intended for discovery by investigators. Both Eddie Murphy and Tom Cruise, of Scott’s mega-films, expressed their remorse. Murphy described Scott as a “wonderful collaborator” and said the Hollywood director will be missed. “Tony was my dear friend and I will really miss him. He was a creative visionary whose mark on film is immeasurable. My deepest sorrow and thoughts are with his family at this time,” said Cruise in a statement.
