Danny Glover reflects on portrayal of Mandela

One day after the death of former South African president, Nelson Mandela, renowned actor Danny Glover received a Career Achievement Award.

Glover was honored in Nassau, Bahamas Friday at the Bahamas International Film Festival, allowing him to reflect on his portrayal of Mandela in the 1987 legendary television film “Mandela”.

Sixty-seven-year-old Glover spoke of his privilege in playing the role, in the wake of 95-year-old Mandela’s December 5 death.

“I think this is particularly special because it comes the day after the transition of someone who I never in my lifetime thought I would get the chance to meet, and someone who became a friend.  He used to affectionately call me, ‘Danny Boy’…It allows you…to reflect on this absolutely wonderful opportunity I’ve had.”

Glover noted Friday that he was the only American actor who played Mandela in a movie prior to his biography being published and his 1990 prison release.
