The films “Cowboys & Aliens,” and “The Smurfs,” both grossed $36.2 million on opening weekend, which, according to studio estimates, is a very rare tie. The amount of earnings for “The Smurfs” is considered to be a major accomplishment for the low-budget film depicting the little blue aliens while the income for “Cowboys & Aliens” is a disappointment.

“Cowboys & Aliens,” a film produced by Stephen Spielberg, Ron Howard and Brian Grazer and featuring actors such as Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig, was expected to easily win. Experts believe the western theme of the film discouraged many young viewers from seeing the PG-13 movie.
