The unemployment rate for September reached 5.9%, a six-year low for the month. The national job report also showed that employers added 248,000 jobs last month. This is up significantly from August, where the numbers of employed persons were largely affected by a strike at the New England grocery chain Market Basket. Average hourly earnings have changed little, only up 2 percent over the past year, which is just barely above inflation. CNN reports that the positive trend is good news, but that underemployment rates remain high, and that well-paying jobs are still hard to find.
