Chrysler fights recall

The Chrysler Group will fight the request from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to recall 2.7 million, the company announced on Tuesday. The NHTSA declared the gas tanks in Jeep Grand Cherokees built between 1993 and 2004, along with those in 2002 to the 2007 Jeep Liberty, could possibly spill gas if the car is hit from behind. The administration listed 37 accidents involving the automobiles, causing the deaths of 51 people.

Chrysler disagrees with the NHTSA’s conclusions, saying the cars were involved in high-energy, high-speed crashes and changing the layout of the tanks would not have changed the outcome of the crashes. They plan to fight the recall, even if it reaches the federal court.
