Chrysler auto sales in May are the best in five years

Chrysler Group reported on Friday that May illustrated its best auto sales since 2007, a 30 percent gain from a year earlier. The sales show a strong recovery by the automaker, which was bailed out in 2009 by the federal government after filing for bankruptcy. The company’s sales increased by nearly 20 percent for 12 straight months.

Chrysler brands sold a combined 150,041 vehicles, with Fiat, Ram, Chrysler, and Dodge all showing gains, and the Jeep Wrangler leading the way with a 44 percent jump from a year ago. In a statement, Reid Bigland, president and CEO of the Dodge brand and head of Chrysler Group U.S. sales, said, “In spite of a tremendous amount of global economic uncertainty, the U.S. new vehicle sales industry continues to power ahead.”
