On January 19, the entire Washington, D.C. metro area celebrated Martin Luther King Day by emulation King in his dedication to service. Seneca Creek Church in Gaithersburg, Maryland joined in the celebration by coordinating a day of service event. Hundreds of volunteers participated in the work, which focused on aiding the homeless in the area shelters. Hearts and “God thinks you’re special” quotes (among other quotes) were drawn on the bags by small kids from the neighborhood and church. Sandwiches, fruit and chocolates were also placed in the bags for homeless individuals in the Montgomery County. Other activities benefited the Montgomery County Animal Shelter and the homeless shelters directly. Pastor Mark Tindle and assistant pastor Jeanette Cochran agree that last year’s celebration was an enormous success and was certain that this year’s event would continue the tradition.
