Volodymyr Zelenskyy has reported a Russian drone strike that hit the New Safe Confinement (NSC) shell that protects the fourth reactor of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The NSC was constructed in 2016 and was built to contain the radioactive materials that were there following the catastrophic accident that occurred in April 1986. According to the World Nuclear Association (WNA), the 1986 incident resulted in 30 deaths within just three months because of the drastic radiation. The International Atomic Energy Agency( IAEA) confirmed that its onsite team detected an explosion around 1:50 local time.

The drone reportedly breached the external steel shell covering the NSC, the IAEA indicated that there was no breach of the inner containment structure and showed that the radiation levels remained stable. In a statement released to the public Zelenskyy emphasized the international collaboration involved in constructing the NSC. This characterized Russia’s actions as a broader threat to Ukraine’s national security and global security. Zelenskyy characterized the attack as a terrorist threat and condemned Russia for its military actions. He went on to call for unified international pressure on Russia and urged accountability for what he describes as aggressive actions that endanger lives. The situation remains under observation and authorities have continued to monitor the implications of the incident at Chernobyl.
