U.S. Vice President JD Vance held talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday. India looks to avoid tariffs and is seeking to negotiate a bilateral trade deal with Washington and strengthen its ties with the Trump administration. Vance met with Modi at his residence in New Delhi, and the two leaders “reviewed and positively assessed the progress in various areas of bilateral cooperation.” Modi’s office also issued a statement saying that they “welcomed the significant progress” in the negotiations on an expected trade deal between the two countries, the statement said.
The White House issued a statement saying that Vance and Modi set the terms for ongoing talks and “laying down a roadmap for further discussion.” They also said that talks between the two nations are moving forward but are not yet finalized, though the Trump administration officials spoke with their counterparts from India in a sign of the high level of engagement. Additionally, the Trump administration has portrayed its tariff strategy as forcing negotiations that could limit China’s influence in that region of the world.
