On Wednesday, Israel and Hamas announced that they had reached a ceasefire deal committing to ending the war in Gaza. President Biden, along with Qatar’s Prime Minister, announced that the agreement held both parties accountable for stopping the violence in Palestine. Biden stated, “This deal will halt the fighting in Gaza, surge much-needed humanitarian assistance to Palestinian civilians, and reunite the hostages with their families after more than 15 months in captivity.” He added that the deal was the same one endorsed by the United Nations Security Council.

Neither Israel nor Hamas immediately confirmed the deal, but officials close to the negotiations reported that both sides had reached a tentative agreement aimed at ending the violence, which had persisted for more than 15 months. Benjamin Netanyahu later stated that there were still “several unresolved issues that needed to be addressed” but expressed hope that “the details would be finalized that night.”

The deal followed weeks of indirect negotiations in Qatar, facilitated by the U.S., Egypt, and Qatar. Envoys from both the Biden and Trump administrations were present at the negotiations, pressuring the parties to reach a final agreement.
