Donald Trump is now expected to sign an executive order that would close the Department of Education. This executive order would call upon the U.S. Education Secretary Linda McMahon “to take all necessary steps to facilitate the closure [of]the Department of Education and return education authority to the States.” This was then confirmed by a fact sheet from the White House. Trump is set to sign this executive order at a ceremony with the governors of Texas, Indiana, Florida, and Ohio. This move is something that Trump has been discussing as early as his campaign but is only now able to carry out. This comes shortly after Trump introduced significant cuts to the workforce at the Department of Education.
The executive order also instructs McMahon to act “to the maximum extent appropriate and permitted by law.” The Department of Education cannot be completely removed without congressional approval.
