A surge in egg prices across the nation has left many Americans frustrated, with some grocery stores limiting the number of eggs customers can purchase. By November 2024, the average price of eggs had risen by 38%, increasing from $2.14 to $3.37 per dozen, with prices as high as $5.75 in some regions, according to the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service.

The shortage stems primarily from a nationwide bird flu outbreak that has significantly impacted poultry supplies. Over 130 million poultry across all 50 states have been affected, leading to a decline in egg availability and driving up costs.

Experts say the highly contagious nature of bird flu has amplified its impact, but it remains unclear when egg prices will return to normal.
