President Trump has made immigration policy a major priority for his second administration. However, a growing number of states, cities, and local police departments, have indicated that they do not plan on helping Trump with this agenda. More and more cities have identified Trump’s immigration policy as some of the harshest in history and are not taking steps to help enact it.
Todd Schmader, chief of the Omaha police has stated “The Omaha police department has no plans to participate in any raids.” For many this resistance is a key way to defy Trump and his agenda. The Nebraska police department posted a video on YouTube where they stated that local officers “do not and will not” stop people to check their legal status. Officials with the Department of Homeland Security say that they have launched nationwide efforts to aid Trump in the identification and detainment of immigrants without legal status including those who were allowed into the U.S. by Biden’s administration.
The Department of Homeland Security officials have stated that their agents are free to conduct raids at churches and schools. This cancels the guidelines that made these areas classified as “sensitive” and therefore off limits.
