Kentucky clerk placed in contempt and jail for refusing gay couple’s license

Kentucky clerk Kim Davis has been placed in contempt and jailed after defying the Supreme Court’s decision to allow same-sex marriages, by refusing to issue marriage licenses. Originally, the plaintiffs suing Davis had asked the judge to fine her until she complied, but the judge stated that he was unsure of whether a fine would be enough.  The Rowan County clerk became a public figure this week after her refusal to comply, resulting in an appeal to the Supreme Court.  The appeal asked the lower court to put aside its decision while she waited for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit to issue an opinion on the matter.  On Monday, the Supreme Court denied that stay.
