Tina Knowles, the mother of Beyoncé and Solange, has opened up about the recent battle with breast cancer in a deeply personal interview with Gayle King. The 71-year-old said that she was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer in her left breast after doctors discovered two tumors during a mammogram appointment. In the interview, she said, “I’ve always tried to take care of myself. I just … was in disbelief.”
The American Cancer Society recommends a mammogram every 1 to 2 years for women over 55. Knowles explained that she missed her routine appointment because of the COVID-19 pandemic and hadn’t rescheduled it until last year. During her appointment, doctors found two tumors, one was benign and the other was found to have Stage 1 cancer. She was later informed that she could have detected the tumor at Stage 0. Despite the delay, the cancer had not spread and was considered slow-growing. Knowles also underwent a lumpectomy to remove the tumor from her breast in August. Beyoncé, Solange, and some of her friends came to the hospital to support her ahead of her surgery, and Knowles is now cancer-free. Knowles has a new memoir titled “Matriarch”, which has been chose as Oprah’s new Book Club pick.
