Libertarians select presidential ticket

Libertarians selected a presidential ticket on Sunday, with former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson as their presidential nominee. Johnson will be running with former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld, his preferred running mate. Libertarians contend their party could play a larger role in the 2016 election, with large portions of the electorate viewing both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton unfavorably. At the party convention in Orlando, Florida, Johnson said Trump’s immigration policies were “just racist.” Since the Libertarian Party is the only third party on the ballot in all 50 states, Johnson will be the only available alternative to Trump and Clinton. “At a minimum, I think we’re in the presidential debates,” Johnson said.

Amber Heard granted restraining order against Johnny Depp

A Los Angeles judge granted Amber Heard a restraining order against husband Johnny Depp on Friday, after claims that Depp has been abusive. Heard also filed for divorce earlier last week. Heard has alleged, “During the entirety of our relationship, Johnny has been verbally and physically abusive to me.” She continued, “Johnny has had a long-held and widely-acknowledged public and private history of drug and alcohol abuse. He has a short fuse.” Depp told Rolling Stone three years ago that he is not an alcoholic, but that he self-medicates, “just to calm the circus.” Heard also supplied photos to the court, which she said showed injuries to her face from an alleged altercation with Depp on May 21. Depp has rejected Heard’s claims of domestic violence, filing a “memorandum of points of authorities.” The document says, “Amber is attempting to secure a premature financial resolution by alleging abuse.”

Cost of metered parking in DC to increase starting June 1

Starting Wednesday, the cost of metered parking will go up across the city of Washington D.C. All meters will cost $2.30 – an increase of 30 cents an hour in premium zones, and a 200 percent jump from the current meter rate of 75 cents per hour in normal demand areas. “This does not increase one parking meter space in the city,” said John Townsend, manager of public and government affairs at AAA Mid-Atlantic. “They are exploiting motorists. There’s a finite number of parking meters in the city.” With 18,000 parking meters in D.C., the auto club accused the city of excessive ticketing. “The District has such an impressive dragnet that it issued over 1.6 million parking tickets last year,” Townsend said. He calculates that those parking tickets amounted to almost $88 million.

18 known cases of Zika virus found in Virginia

The Virginia Department of Health has found 18 known case of the Zika virus in the state as of May 26. Four people are carrying the virus in D.C. and 17 in Maryland, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Half of the people affected with the virus in Virginia live in the northern region of the state. Although most people may not know they are carriers of the virus, if bitten by a mosquito, that mosquito could become dangerous to pregnant mothers if the virus is transmitted. The CDC suggests pregnant women protect themselves by covering their skin and using insect repellant.

Man found dead in pool

A 63-year-old man from Glen Burnie is dead after being found unresponsive in a pool at his home. According to Anne Arundel County Fire spokesman Capt. Russ Davies, the man discovered Monday morning is believed to have gone outside to clean the pool. Officials are still working to determine the cause of the death, but they are not ruling out a drowning. Since there was only one foot of water in the pool, Davies says the man may have injured his head after falling into the pool. Police have not yet released the man’s identity.
