Sanders backs DNC chair’s primary opponent
Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders said he supports Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s Democratic opponent, Tim Canova of Florida’s 23rd congressional district. “Well, clearly, I favor her opponent,” Sanders told State of the Union’s Jake Tapper. “His views are much closer to mine than as to Wasserman Schultz’s.” Sanders, who has had an increasingly bitter feud with Wasserman Shultz, said if elected president he would not reappoint Wasserman Schultz to head the DNC.

American ex-POW in Japan to travel with Obama to Hiroshima
An American prisoner of war, who was held by Japan during World War II, has been invited to accompany President Barack Obama on his trip to Hiroshima this week. Daniel Crowley was in the U.S. Army Air Corps when his unit surrendered on the Bataan Peninsula in the Philippines in 1942, and was shipped to Japan in 1944 to work as a slave laborer in a copper mine until the end of the war. “It’s a living thing with me,” he was quoted as saying in a biography. “It’s not ancient history at all.” Obama confirmed in an interview that he would not apologize for the American atomic bombings on his visit to Hiroshima.

Trial begins for IT executive charged with wife’s murder
Braulio Castillo, former chief executive of Strong Castle Inc., was charged on April 2, 2014 with first degree murder for killing his wife, Michelle Castillo, who was found dead in her home. Castillo’s lawyers said in their opening statements that his wife committed suicide. However, law enforcement officials said Michelle Castillo was found in what looked like a staged suicide, after being beaten and suffocated. The defense argued the bruising on Castillo’s face was consistent with those found on someone who had committed suicide, and that experts would testify that her death was a suicide. In March 2013, Michelle Castillo had also filed for a protected order against Braulio Castillo.

Verdict expected in Baltimore Freddie Gray-officer trial
Baltimore Circuit Judge Barry Williams is expected to hand down his verdict in the case of officer Edward Nero, who faces charges of assault, misconduct in office and reckless endangerment after the arrest and subsequent death of Freddie Gray. Prosecutors say Gray was unlawfully arrested and that Nero was negligent when he didn’t make sure the prisoner was buckled. Nero opted for a bench trial instead of a trial by jury, and Judge Williams is expected to announce his verdict Monday. Nero faces up to a maximum of ten years in prison for the assault charge, and up to five-year maximums for the other two charges.
