Trump defends racist statements against judge with Mexican heritage

In an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper on Friday, Donald Trump repeatedly defended his claims that the judge overseeing the lawsuit against Trump University is biased because of his Mexican heritage. Trump claimed his statements were not racist. “He’s proud of his heritage. I respect him for that,” Trump said. “He’s a Mexican. We’re building a wall between here and Mexico.” He continued, “I’m building a wall. I’m trying to keep business out of Mexico. Mexico’s fine. He’s of Mexican heritage, and he’s very proud of it, as I am of where I come from.” Trump said the judge, U.S. District Court Judge Gonzalo Curiel, has made “rulings that people can’t even believe.”

Ga., Calif., House primaries show pressures in GOP

Upcoming elections in Georgia and California illustrate the anti-establishment stance taken by GOP candidates. “When you’re head of an organization that has a 15 percent approval rating, you worry,” said Tom Davis, a former Virginia congressman and head of the House GOP campaign committee. Candidates, such as local mayor Drew Ferguson, have branded themselves as “a conservative outsider”, distancing themselves from the Washington Republicans. However, some say that their values still align with those of the GOP’s. “We’re consistent with Republican positions,” said Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, chairman of the House Freedom Caucus. “Why is that a concern?”
