Virginia – Historic designation given to first Virginia school to integrate

0

The first public school in Virginia to integrate has been given historic designation by the Arlington County Board. The designation of Stratford School comes as a result of a group, which included some of the black students who integrated, who filed a petition to give the building historic designation one year ago. The school currently houses special-needs students and a magnet program. It is undergoing renovations to make room for a new middle school that is expected to open by 2019. The school was first integrated after a court battle in February 1959.
