The Washington Post reports that Wise County Circuit Court Judge Tammy McElyea has denied Washington-area sniper Lee Boyd Malvo’s request to change his name. According to the Post, Malvo asked for a name change citing that his current name leaves him vulnerable to assault due to his crimes. McElyea denied Malvo, arguing that Malvo had not had problems in his seven years at Red Onion State Prison in Pound.

Malvo is serving a life sentence after participating in a cross-country killing spree as a 17-year-old with John Allen Muhammad in 2002. Muhammad was executed in 2009.
