Obama to pitch immigration reform

President Obama will be traveling to Mexico on Thursday to sell his new immigration overhaul. The president will meet with Mexico’s president, Enrique Pena Nieto in order to discuss Mexico’s economic success. Obama stated that he hopes his presence in Mexico and later in Costa Rica will help promote the priority to create middle class jobs.

Obama also plans to gear his visit toward audiences back in the U.S. According to deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes, if the president is able to stimulate Mexico’s economy, there becomes less of a need for people to immigrate illegally. “If the Mexican economy is growing, it forestalls the need for people to migrate to the United States to find work.” Rhodes said.

The Obama administration is currently downplaying Pena Nieto’s recent steps to end U.S. security access to the Mexican border in order to stop drug trafficking. The two leaders plan to discuss the issue when they meet. However, Obama stated that he does not wish to judge any new moves until he meets Mexican officials.

According to U.S. Chamber of Commerce President/CEO Thomas Donohue, it is important for Obama to visit Pena Nieto early in his term while Pena Nieto is still forming his own plans and judgments. The biggest issue to be dealt with, however, is border control, and Donohue emphasizes the importance of creating a policy that works with and for the Mexican government.

Many Latin Americans are still skeptical and lack trust in any policy that will help improve immigration law. Although Pena Nieto will have the opportunity to showcase his country’s economic gains, much corruption remains present. Human rights continue to be a problem and improvements of Mexico’s judicial system has not occurred.
