Attorney General Eric Holder held in contempt of Congress

Attorney General Eric Holder has been held in criminal contempt by the United States House of Representatives on Thursday for refusing to turn over documents in relation to Operation Fast and Furious, a gun-running sting. Congress voted 255-67, marking the first time in American history that the head of the Justice Department has been held in contempt by Congress. Nearly every House Republican backed the measure, along with almost 20 Democrats.

Holder described the vote in a statement as “the regrettable culmination of what became a misguided — and politically motivated — investigation during an election year.” The general attorney, appointed by President Barack Obama, accused Republicans leading the investigation of focusing “on politics over public safety.”
