Maryland halts signatures process in “Dream Act” petition

In July, opponents of the “Dream Act” legislation in Maryland collected the required signatures to put the legislation on the ballot for the November 2012 elections. Voters will determine if the bill, which allows children of illegal aliens to pay in-state tuition fees to attend college, will stand.

However, the Board has discovered illegal signatures that were confirmed by board members. 108,923 signatures were collected and confirmed, while 55,726 signatures were needed to put the legislation on the 2012 ballots.

The Maryland State Board of Elections certified last month that opponents of the measure had gathered enough signatures to place the measure on the November 2012 ballot for voters to decide. Lawyers for the board are determining whether the signatures were gained legally through an internet collection process.
