The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Olney, Maryland held their fundraising event on June 11 at Sherwood High School in Sandy Spring, Maryland. The event began on Saturday with the Survivors Luncheon followed by the opening ceremony and ended on Sunday morning. The Survivors Luncheon speaker was Debbi Otani from Montgomery General Hospital and the keynote speaker was Dr. Isabella Martire. With 800 dedicated individuals including 31 committee members lead by chairperson Bryna Selig and 69 individual teams, all donating their time and energy to raising money for the American Cancer Society. Comprised of tent sites, displays, raffles, entertainment, a moon bounce, a dunk tank, baked goods and a variety of foods, the event was filled with fun for all ages.

The emotional Luminaria Ceremony at dusk remembered those who lost their battle with cancer. The enormously successful event raised $253,000.

The Relay for Life was started 25 years ago by Dr. Gordy Klatt in Tacoma, Washington and has evolved into 5000 Relays around the country each year raising a grand total of 3.8 billion dollars so far to find a cure for cancer.
