The year 1845 owns quite a bit of historical significance in the progression and development of our beautiful nation—Texas’ independence from Mexico, the beginning of the Polk presidency, the Naval Academy opening in Annapolis and Destin, Florida was founded by Capt. Leonard Destin. This little Floridian city hosts millions of vacationers each year. Its beaches and warm temperatures are the obvious alluring elements, but its activities, regional restaurants and home away from home feel makes visitors want to stay and take up residency.

Lodging

Whether it is a hotel, condominium, or campground, Destin has the right lodging for your taste. The top two hotels are unquestionably the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort and Spa located on Sandestin Drive and the Henderson Park Inn, which offers a very contemporary, culturally-inclined feel for its guests.  The former is more extravagant and luxurious and the latter provides a more enhanced variety of amenities.  For condos, the Destin Gulfgate Seascape Golf Beach and Tennis Resort, the Crystal Sands Gulfview, and the Majestic Sun at Seascape Resort are your best bets. All of these have tremendous views of the ocean and some are entirely surrounded by water. The condos are essentially homes away from home. Lastly, don’t forget to check out the campgrounds for those who prefer a more direct calling to nature and its qualities. The campgrounds are very distinct and create a feeling unsurpassed by those general feelings experienced solely on a beach. Typically, these campgrounds are only a short walk/run/bike ride to the beach. A few of the campground sites include: Camp Gulf, Geronimo RV Resort, and Destin RV Beach Resort. Here, vacationers experience nature at its finest and a more practical connection between heart, mind, body and soul. Regardless, any and all of these lodging varieties are worth calling home for the duration of a trip to one of the more marvelous beaches Florida has to offer!

Dining

Fortunately, lodging is only a single aspect of vacationing in Destin. What’s more is the dining experience! The aforementioned Henderson Park Inn offers a supreme, once-in-a-lifetime feel. The restaurant is called Beach Walk, nestled right along the beach with the grandest of views, where visitors can chow down on virtually any food imaginable. Other restaurants vacationers will love include: Buck’s Smokehouse, Surf’s Hut, Dewey Destin’s Seafood and Restaurant, Marina Café, Harry T’s Lighthouse and the can’t miss breakfast joint, Donut Hole Bakery Café. All of these restaurants can be found along Scenic Highway 98 while traveling through Destin. For those in need or want of a good alcoholic beverage, do not ignore McGuire’s Irish Pub. Moreover, Wine World and Chan’s Wine World offer the best selection of wine for any occasion (and we do mean any).

Activities and Entertainment

Whether one is on the quest for alone time on the beach early in the morning to watch a beautiful sunrise, wanting to test the nightlife in Destin, or anything in between, you are in luck. The top rated beach is Crystal Sands Beach. The crystal sand here mixed with the natural blue/green coloring of the Gulf of Mexico is sure to put any beachcomber at peace. Destin offers dolphin cruises as well, so do not miss out on a Southern Star Dolphin Cruise. Those interested in parasailing, snorkeling, and deep sea fishing must check out Pelican Adventure, Inc., which is a top of the line leader in all of these categories. Destin is home to the nation’s only sand river. So, why not kayak or canoe down this pure white sand bottom and sandbar river with canoes from Blackwater Canoe Rental? Destin also has multiple adventure parks offering go-karts, putt-putt courses, bungee jumping and bumper boats. Of course, there are various clubs and live music joints, such as Village Door Nightclub, Bric a’ Brac, Act4Murder, and the Bowery on Thirty-A, among others. And while you’re in Destin, you must take a stroll down the beautiful 30A highway and collect one of the must have Destin vehicle stickers for the car while you’re at it!
