U.S.-born al Qaeda cleric killed in Yemen

American-born Anwar al-Awlaki, a prominent cleric in al Qaeda’s active branch, was killed Friday in Yemen. The Yemeni government and Defense ministers announced him killed following an airstrike against his convoy, though further details have yet to be released. Al-Awlaki used his technical skills and fluent English to gain recruits and orchestrate attacks against the U.S.

Al-Awlaki was known as an eloquent preacher to his followers, and used his English-language sermons to call for holy war against the United States. A man who attempted to destroy Times Square with a car bomb in May 2010 claimed to have been “inspired” by al-Awlaki. Al-Awlaki was the first American to be placed on the CIA “kill or capture” list.
