News Alert: D.C. Councilman Harry Thomas, Jr. resigns

Washington, D.C. Councilman Harry Thomas, Jr. said on Thursday night that he has resigned effective immediately from the D. C. Council. Thomas said he will plead guilty to two felonies as part of an agreement with federal officials. In his announcement on Thursday, he said, “I am resigning my position as a member of the Council effective immediately. I made some very serious mistakes and exhibited inadequate and flawed judgment. I take full responsibility for my actions. I am truly sorry.” The charges stem from allegations that he used more that $300,000 in funds for a youth program for personal purchases and also filed false tax returns.

The U.S. government filed a four-page document alleging that the councilman embezzled the funds and further under-reported his income during the years the money was embezzled. The document also states that Thomas will give up a motorcycle and Chevrolet Tahoe as part of the charges.

In December, Thomas’ home was raided by FBI and IRS agents and items, including an automobile, were confiscated. Thomas has been under pressure from some colleagues on the Council and from constituents, who were calling for his resignation.
