An official overseeing the Washington D.C. police has been named inspector general of the New York Police Department. Philip Eure was named Friday and will be starting in May, overseeing a staff of 50. Eure has been the head of the District of Columbia’s Office of Police Complaints. Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s veto to create the watchdog position was overridden by the New York City Council, also passing a law making it easier for people to sue over stop-and-frisk. New laws were also propelled by concerns about the NYPD’s extensive surveillance of Muslims.
