The World War II pilot who became famous after flying under the arches of the Eiffel Tower in pursuit of a German aircraft, has passed away at the age of 92.

Fighter pilot William Overstreet Jr. died at a Roanoke hospital Sunday.

His infamous air chase in Nazi-occupied Paris became global knowledge and has been positively acknowledged by the French government.

In 2009 the French ambassador to the United States awarded Overstreet with France’s Legion of Honor at the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford.

After retiring from his work as an accountant at age 65, Overstreet donated his time to various charities and veterans groups.
