According to the Portland Water Bureau, close to 670,000 residents were advised to boil drinking water after multiple tests revealed E. coli to be found in water samples. Bureau Administrator David Shaff released a statement explaining the E. coli risk: “While we believe at this time that the potential health risk is relatively small, we take any contamination seriously and are taking every precaution to protect public health.” The discovery of E. coli bacteria in the water suggests human or animal fecal contamination. The discovery of the bacteria was found during routine sampling that began earlier this week
