Defense rests in murder trial of ex-NFL tight end Aaron Hernandez

The defense lawyers for ex-NFL tight end Aaron Michael Hernandez in the murder trial rested their case Monday afternoon after calling just three witnesses to the stand. Hernandez has pleaded not guilty to murder in the June 17, 2013, killing of Odin Lloyd (a linebacker for a semi-professional football team, the Boston Bandits). At the time of the murder, Hernandez had a $40 million contract with the New England Patriots. Hernandez’s lawyers spent less than a day putting on a defense, but they cross-examined many of the prosecution’s 131 witnesses during the +2-month-long trial. Prosecutors have not been able to explain a plausible motive for the killing, had virtually no witnesses to the shooting and the murder weapon was never found. Nevertheless, they presented hundreds of pieces of evidence, including surveillance footage from inside Hernandez’s home that showed him holding a black object that appeared to be a gun less than ten minutes after Lloyd’s demise. A rolled marijuana cigarette found near Lloyd’s body had DNA from both men on it. Closing arguments are scheduled for Tuesday or Wednesday. After that, the fifteen jurors will be given explicit instructions, then three other people will be randomly selected as alternate jurors.
