DNC CEO resigns in wake of email controversy

The CEO of the Democratic National Committee resigned Tuesday in the wake of the committee’s hacked email controversy. Amy Dacey is the highest-ranking DNC official to step down due to the email hack. The DNC’s CFO Brad Marshall and Communications Director Luis Miranda also announced their departure in a press release Tuesday afternoon. Although Dacey is well-respected by Hillary Clinton’s campaign and the DNC, the committee is looking to clean house in the wake of the leaked emails. Interim Chairwoman Donna Brazile announced former Howard Dean aide Tom McMahon would lead a transition team to focus on the November election. Doug Thornell is also joining the committee as an interim senior adviser.

Jimmy Fallon to host 2017 Golden Globes

NBC announced late-night talk show host Jimmy Fallon will be hosting the 2017 Golden Globes. This will be Fallon’s first time hosting an awards show since he hosted the 2010 Emmy Awards. “This is the most spontaneous and uninhibited award show on television, and Jimmy’s playful, disarming comedic brilliance makes him the ideal host to enhance and elevate the sense of fun and irreverence that’s made the Golden Globes one of the premier events of the entire broadcast year,” wrote NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt in a statement. The show will air January 8, 2017 on NBC, marking the unofficial start of Hollywood’s award season.

Fairfax lawmakers call for U.Va. tuition freeze

A pair of Virginia state senators wants the University of Virginia to freeze tuition, citing a massive investment fund worth billions of dollars that is controlled by the school. Democratic Sens. Chap Petersen and Scott Surovell, who represent the City of Fairfax and Fairfax County, wrote a letter to the University of Virginia Board of Visitors calling for a tuition freeze effective Jan. 1, 2017. “There is no reason to have a surplus of operating funds, at least of that size, unless you are systematically overcharging for services,” wrote Petersen. The two senators say money from the Strategic Investment Fund, worth $2.3 billion, should be returned to students and families through lower tuition. “The most appropriate policy would be freezing or reducing tuition at all of the university’s schools including graduate programs until this reserve is reduced to a more appropriate level,” Surovell said.
