6.2 magnitude earthquake hits central Italy

Sixty-three people have died in a 6.2 magnitude earthquake that struck central Italy early Wednesday. Rescuers are continuing their search for survivors, but are struggling to reach some remote towns. Amatrice, a small mountain town, was at the epicenter of the quake. “The town is no more,” Amatrice Mayor Sergio Pirozzi said. CNN’s Frederik Pleitgen reports that “The authorities here believe many many people may have died in this quake and that the death toll may rise because of the magnitude of this, and because many old historic buildings have crumbled.” Pleitgen said crews need heavy high powered jacks to lift things and big metal saws to get through concrete and metal. “They always say the first 72 hours are key — for those who are trapped, that’s (typically) how long they can survive,” he said.

‘Law & Order’ actor Steven Hill dies at 94

“Law & Order” actor Steven Hill died at age 94 in Monsey, New York. Hill was best know for playing District Attorney Adam Schiff on the show and was part of the cast for ten years until he left in 2000. “Steven was not only one of the truly great actors of his generation, he was one of the most intelligent people I have ever met,” “Law & Order” creator and executive producer Dick Wolf said in a statement to CNN. “He is also the only actor I’ve known who consistently tried to cut his own lines. He will be missed but fortunately he can be seen ubiquitously on ‘Law & Order’ reruns.” Hill was previously best known for his role in the “Mission: Impossible” TV series, which aired in 1966-67.

DC Ward 3 residents sue over planned homeless shelter

A 50-bed shelter that was approved by the D.C. Council is planned to be built in the parking lot of the 2nd District Station on Idaho Avenue. However, NBC Washington reports the Council didn’t consult the Advisory Neighborhood Commission about the location. David Brown, a lawyer representing the neighbors of the proposed shelter site, said they want to “go back to the drawing board and give the (Advisory Neighborhood Commission) an opportunity to presents its issues and concerns.” The suit says input from the Commission is required by D.C. law.

Prescriptions are required for people to obtain the payment, the state health department says, and one refill is allowed per month. No vaccine currently exists to provide protection against the virus that is transmitted by mosquitoes. The virus has been spreading across America since last year, and virus-carrying mosquitoes have been reported to have reached Florida last month.
